Are Hockey Helmets The Best For Roller Derby?
The answer is NO.
Why?
Because Hockey Helmets do not offer enough protection. Hockey Helmets cannot pass the CPSC test.
Explanation:
Hockey Helmets cannot pass the CPSC test. The CPSC test is the standard helmet test for skate, bike and roller skating helmets. The CPSC Test simulates a 14 mph crash (and or drop from 6 ft).
CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) Test Explanation: A helmet that will be used for skateboarding, cycling or roller skating must reduce a "high impact" to the head to under 300 G's. The "high impact" is a Velocity of 6.20 meters per second which is equivalent in layman's terms to a crash going at 14mph or a slam from 6 ft. Hockey Helmets do not reduce the impact to under 300 G's and therefore FAIL the CPSC Test.
Which Helmet is the Best For Roller Derby?
A helmet that is CPSC Certified is the best helmet for Roller Derby. (Look for a sticker inside the helmet that states it is CPSC Certified. If there is no sticker than it is not CPSC Certified).
Fact: Hockey Helmets cannot pass the CPSC test.
Video:
I was curious to see if hockey helmets would pass the cpsc test because we had so many roller derby girls asking if Hockey Helmets were good to wear for Roller Derby. The Hockey Helmets do not even come close to passing the CPSC test.
