Choosing A Helmet For Roller Derby

Best Advice For Buying A Roller Derby Helmet:
You should ALWAYS buy a helmet that is both CPSC Certified and ASTM Certified.  (ASTM F1492)

Roller Derby Helmet Safety Ratings:
5 Stars - CPSC Certified and ASTM Certified
These helmets are the gold standard in safety. They are the safest helmets for Roller Derby. They pass the US Helmet Safety Standard test (CPSC test) and they pass the multiple impact test (ASTM test). You are officially protected against the smaller multiple impact slams and the big single impact hits.

Example of a CPSC and ASTM Certified Helmet: S-One Lifer Helmet

4 Stars - CPSC Certified Only
These helmets are super safe and pass the CPSC test (which is the toughest test to pass.) These helmets only get 4 stars because it would be nice to be "ASTM certified" for multiple impacts.

Example of a CPSC Certified Helmet: Bell Faction Helmet

3 Stars - ASTM Certified Only
These helmets are not so good because they will not pass the CPSC test. Which means they won't protect you against the big slams. And which also means you can't sell them in some States for Roller Derby use.

Example of an ASTM Certified Helmet: There are no examples of a ASTM Only certified helmet.

2 Stars - Non-Certified Multiple Impact
These helmets are super popular right now. They are described as "multiple impact" helmets
but they cannot pass the CPSC test or the ASTM multiple impact test.

Example of a Non-Certified Multiple Impact Helmet: Triple 8 Brainsaver (w/ Sweatsaver Liner)

S-One Lifer Helmet is an example of
a helmet that meets the Gold Standard for Helmet Safety.
This helmet is both CPSC and ASTM certified.
