What is the safest multiple impact helmet? The safest helmet for Roller Derby is one that is ASTM F1492 (multiple impact) and CPSC Certified. If the helmet bears these certifications you know that it is certified to protect you to the highest helmet safety standards. You can roll with confidence knowing that you are wearing the safest helmet. If a helmet is not certified it means it cannot pass the test parameters for the helmet safety certifications.
What if a "Multiple Impact" helmet does not have any certification labels?
You should not wear a helmet that is not certified. Over the last few years there have been increased reports of concussions while wearing the soft foam / non-certified helmets. (i know they are sooo comfy). We strongly discourage Roller Derby participants from wearing non-certified helmets.
Be very wary of helmet companies and online derby websites that are marketing non-certified helmets as "multiple impact":
For example, the Triple 8 Brainsaver Helmet (with sweatsaver liner) is not certified and is marketed as a "multiple impact" helmet. Roller Derby participants are lured in by the word "multiple impact" but the helmet does not pass ANY helmet safety standards. Remember: There is a reason helmets are non-certified... it means they cannot pass the helmet safety testing standards. If you want the safest multiple impact helmet make sure it bears an ASTM F1492 and CPSC Certification.
Summary: The safest and most protective multiple impact helmet is ASTM and CPSC Certified. And obviously if you hit hard enough to crack the helmet or break the helmet you have to replace the helmet. For more info about s-one helmets check out the s-one website or the s-one store.
